From the idea to the project

On November 27, 2018, the Grant agreement was signed in Novigrad for the project geoIST3A – Valorisation of Natural Heritage in the County of Istria by Improving the Competitiveness of the Tourist Offer, as applied to the Call for Proposals Promoting Sustainable Development of Natural Heritage within the Operational Program Competitiveness and Cohesion 2014-2020.

The Project holder

The project holder is the Public Institution for the Management of Protected Natural Areas in Istria County “Natura Histrica”. The project partners are City of Rovinj-Rovigno and the Tourist Board of Rovinj-Rovigno.

The general goal of the project is to help improve the competitiveness of the tourist offer by valorising the natural heritage in the area of the city of Rovinj-Rovigno:

The project activated an unused natural heritage aiming at creation of new tourist offer and experience.

The Quarry Fantazija has a status of a geological monument since 1987. However, although the site represents a unique example of limestone sedimentology and one of the most important and interesting quarries in the world, it was not adequately organised or valorised, until the Project. Through the implementation of Project activities, a framework for sustainable management of biodiversity of this area was established.

 

GEOLOGICAL MONUMENT THE QUARRY FANTASY

The aim of the organisation of geological monument the Quarry Fantazija is to increase its valorisation and promotion through the reconstruction of the existing access road, parking lot, educational trails, and landscape design and the integration of existing natural areas. The total surface area of the project is 19,028 m2. The plan encompasses the reconstruction of the existing access road and building of a parking lot for buses, cars, and bicycles. Adjacent to the parking lot, a multifunctional educational zone is envisaged, with info point, sanitary facilities, museum area for fossils exhibits and geological samples, various educational activities, workshops and an outdoor classroom. At the beginning of educational trails, a central info point will be set up, with a display of the geological monument contents. The main topics of educational trails will be geology and nature of the quarry. The geological era of the emergence of the quarry will be presented as an introduction to a better understanding of the importance of the geological monument, along with the quarry and natural processes of its renaturalization.
